Why A0 is the default outside North America

The ISO 216 A-series is the paper standard in nearly every country except the US and Canada. A0 is the largest common size, each smaller size is exactly half the one before, and every size has the same proportions. That makes A0 easy to print anywhere and easy to scale down to A1 or A3 for handouts.

Instructions usually say "A0 portrait". Landscape A0 (1189 mm wide) appears less often, mostly at engineering and computing meetings; check the board width before choosing it.

Layout advice for A0

  • Portrait: two or three columns. Three columns of about 26 cm suit most posters; two suit text-led disciplines.
  • Landscape: three or four columns, or a wide centre column for one dominant figure.
  • Type: title 85–120 pt, headings 40–60 pt, body 24–32 pt, captions at least 18 pt.
  • Leave a margin of at least 15 mm. Many printers cannot print right to the edge without trimming.

A0 when you are printing in the US

US print shops stock inch-based rolls, but A0 still prints easily: the 33.1 in short side fits a standard 36 in roll and the extra paper is trimmed. Ask for "A0, 841 × 1189 mm, trim to size" so the shop does not scale the file to 36 × 48 in, which would change the proportions.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an A0 poster in inches?

33.1 × 46.8 in (841 × 1189 mm).

Is A0 bigger than 36 x 48?

Slightly smaller. A0 is 33.1 × 46.8 in; 36 x 48 is 36 × 48 in. An A0 poster fits on a 36 x 48 board with a small margin.

Can I export A0 to PowerPoint?

Yes. A0 is well under PowerPoint's 56 in slide limit, so the download opens at full size.
