PosterGenius Alternatives: 7 Scientific Poster Tools Compared

A fair comparison of PosterGenius and the main alternatives for scientific posters, including PowerPoint, Canva, BioRender, LaTeX, Illustrator and PosterScientist.

PosterGenius is one of the best-known dedicated tools for scientific posters, and for good reason. But it is not the only option, and depending on your budget, operating system and how you like to work, another tool may suit you better. This is a fair comparison of PosterGenius and seven alternatives. We make one of them (PosterScientist), so we have tried to be clear about where each tool, including ours, is stronger or weaker.

Details below reflect the vendors' own websites as of October 2026. Prices and features change, so check the official site before buying.

PosterGenius: what it does well

PosterGenius, from SciGen Technologies, is desktop software for Windows and macOS designed specifically for scientific posters. According to its website, its main strengths are:

Pricing model: a one-time licence per computer. At the time of writing, the store lists a single-computer licence at $139 (shown as a special offer, reduced from $199), a two-computer licence at $169, and site licences for five and ten computers. Minor updates are free. A free trial is available, limited to four poster sizes, a maximum of five posters and a background watermark.

Trade-offs: it is a desktop installation (the trial download is listed at over 300 MB), works on one or two licensed computers, and collaborators need their own copy to edit the native file.

Questions to ask before you pick a tool

Whichever tool you choose, the fundamentals matter more than the software: a single clear message, large readable text, strong figures and a logical layout.
